CLIMB BEN NEVIS

Standing at a height of 1345 meters above sea level Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. It has many routes to its summit, but the most common way to climb Ben Nevis is via the ‘mountain path’ which journeys up the western flank from Glen Nevis.

Synergy Guides prefer a quieter and more exciting ascent via the spectacular North face. Here climbers and walkers can travel through simple technical terrain via Ledge Route, or alternatively test your head for heights on one of the classic ridges such as Tower Ridge or Castle Ridge.

Not quite what you are looking for? why not hire a Ben Nevis guide and choose amongst the hundreds of ways to climb ‘the Ben.’

Tower Ridge - Ben Nevis

Why not challenge yourself to one of Scotlands most iconic mountain routes and climb Ben Nevis the hard way? The highlight of its imposing North Face is Tower Ridge, which needs little introduction to hillwalkers and climbers alike. It has been the scene of many epic tales the majority of which culminate around the crux of the route; Tower Gap which guards the way to the summit plateau. It should be better known as one of Scotland’s prize mountaineering routes, one of the longest in the United Kingdom and the centrepiece of the spectacular North Face. In our opinion, Tower Ridge is the best way to reach the summit of Ben Nevis!

  • Absolutely fantastic experience climbing with Synergy in Glen Coe for 3 days. Really well planned and executed by our brilliant guide who showed us all the essentials before taking us up some pretty challenging routes, which is what we asked for. Our guide was very experienced and we never felt at risk, and great company. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a winter adventure.

  • Just had a totally brilliant climbing weekend with Steve from Synergy Guides. Steve is really easy to get along with and his mountaineering and climbing knowledge is absolutely top level. He is patient when he is instructing and has a great ability of reading people and pushing them in a really good way. I have used Steve a number of times before and he has taken me from keen hill walker to mountaineer and climber. Highly recommended and I will be back out with Steve in the future.

  • WOW!What a phenomenal experience and adventure with Steve. My cousin booked up with Synergy Guides for myself, him and a friend. The 3 of us climbed Tower Ridge and the In Pinn. I had never climbed before (which I don't condone - put the preparation in!) but the confidence I took from Steve's competence really got me through it.A very calm, approachable, experienced and knowledgable person and guide.I have already recommended him to a few friends and definitely recommend him to anyone reading this.

  • Initially we booked Steve for a friend's 40th to do a climb in Skye. We enjoyed the experience so much it's become an annual outting. No matter what we want to do Steve will guide us through it. He has helped progress our skills and not only is the general experience great , he will take the time to teach us and build up our abilities while out there. Skills that we can use on our own.Highly recommend synergy guides!

  • I booked Steve to climb Ben Nevis by the Tower Ridge route & what a day!
I have never been challenged as much as I was that day & Steve made it all possible.
It was suppose to be a climb under summer conditions but winter was clinging on & Steve found himself instructing a novice in the use of crampons & an axe whilst also guiding me along the route.
He did an impressive job & instilled confidence in myself which allowed me to climb rock in crampons, walk across icy ridges & even climb ice to reach the summit.
Steve is a friendly, calm, positive & encouraging person who is very skilled in mountain arena & I cannot rate Steve enough.

I would highly recommend him for your adventure in the mountains.

  • Steve is a very experienced guy and made our weekend very memorable. I gained valuable training along the way even though the weather conditions were very challenging Steve made sure we got the training we went for. He is very patient and explains everything very well answering any question and making sure we understood anything explained to us. His knowledge in mountaineering is excellent and I felt very comfortable doing the different challenges he threw at us under his guidance over the weekend. I highly recommend Steve and look forward to using him myself in the future.

  • Steve was very accommodating to provide mountain guiding to suit our request to climb the Inn Pinn. He took into account the weather conditions and as a result we rearranged the climb (fortunately he was still available later in the week). He was very calm and reassuring and didn’t make us feel under pressure at any time. We had a really enjoyable day in his company and would highly recommend his services.

  • Booked 2 days to traverse the Cuillin ridge. Iain was spot on with his plans and is also just an all round good guy to climb with. We managed to get round in the two days despite the weather throwing a few curve balls. All in all a really good two days and will definitely use them in future.

  • have worked with a number of guides in the area and Dave was definitely one of the best. He assessed our team very effectively during the ascent and made sure that we all had an enjoyable and safe traverse of this spectacular ridge. The weather was not ideal but having seen the team on the hill for a couple of hours Dave made the right call and we were rewarded with a memorable day. His leadership and mountain skills were excellent and he went over and above the call of duty by chatting with us for 1/2 hour after the route was completed about other routes we might like to do on this and subsequent trips.

  • Had an amazing time bagging the Innaccessible Pinnacle and Sgurr Na Banachdaich a couple of weeks ago with Steve and Caspar. We had an amazing day for it and they managed to get all 6 of us up and over in one piece (despite a few of us being nervous). I would 100% recommend getting a guide for the Cuillins as they are a completely different beast from the majority of Munros. We'll be back to tick a few more of the list and will definitely be booking with Synergy Guides again!

  • I’ve been out with Steve Holmes quite a few times and would strongly recommend him as your guide. His sole aim is to give you a great day out. He is an excellent judge of where to go for the conditions, weather and your ability. On the hill, he is ever alert to your safety and also offers good coaching tips. He is such a good climber that I always feel he is completely on top of everything. Importantly, too, he is great company and full of enthusiasm, whatever the weather.I am now in my early seventies, and prone to angina, so the qualities above are very important to me. Steve makes sure that associate guides working for Synergy meet the same standards. Through Synergy I’ve had wonderful days on winter routes at III to V in standard.

  • Well what can I say, everything it says on the tin and more!!!!Two days with Steve on the top 6 Cuillins in really good weather. Ive had UK guides in the past, climbed with guides in South America, Asia, Africa etc but I must admit this one to one with Synergy was the best Ive experienced. Steve has the ability to quickly pick up your strenghts and weaknesses and then suggest the best routes which were just right to push the envelope without being over demanding or super scary. His knowledge of all things Skye was just vast which led to some stimulating and informative conversation from the local geology to how fast you can get between them all!!I would highly recommend to anybody with what ever experience they may or may not have!!

  • Simply Outstanding In short, Steve has taken me from being a keen hill walker to leading Graded scrambles and climbs and doing my first Graded Scottish winter routes - something I never thought I would achieve.

Steve is really easy to get on with which is, in my opinion, really important when you are a nervous climber and being introduced to the technical aspects of scrambling and climbing. He is calm and instills confidence in you as you learn the skills and knowledge. Steve took me out of my comfort zone (by agreement) but I never, ever, felt anything but safe. Thanks to Steve I have had some superb adventures including all but one of the Ben Nevis ridges (getting the last one this year), summits on Skye, some great scrambles in Glencoe and climbs in Glen Nevis and I have managed to bag at least two Grade 3 Scottish Winter routes and now have the confidence to lead other folk on routes.

I can't rate Steve highly enough and highly recommend him to anyone wanting to enjoy the great outdoors in Scotland

Castle Ridge - Ben Nevis

Castle Ridge is the least technical of the ‘great ridges’. That’s not to say it is an easy way to climb Ben Nevis however, as the route climbs short steep steps of moderate ground with plenty of really enjoyable grade 2 scrambling in-between. The hardest section of Castle Ridge is a lovely 10-meter chimney which overlooks our now distant approach path – it really is one of the best routes on the mountain.

Castle Ridge boasts similarities to climbing Tower Ridge but with less commitment and a slightly shorter approach. For these reasons, we suggest Castle Ridge as a brilliant initiation to high end scrambling on the North face and a good introduction to technical Scottish winter climbing.

Ledge Route - Ben Nevis

It is a common mistake to think the North face only entertains hardcore climbers. The best of the easy scrambles on Ben Nevis is via Ledge Route which winds its way through the most spectacular scenery culminating in a narrow but very short ‘ledge’ which gives the route its name. It is a popular Scottish winter climb, but you will seldom see many people here even on the most beautiful summer days. For anyone looking for a challenging but easy route to the summit of Ben Nevis, Ledge Route is the one for you.
