CLIMB BEN NEVIS

Standing at a height of 1345 meters above sea level Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. It has many routes to its summit, but the most common way to climb Ben Nevis is via the ‘mountain path’ which journeys up the western flank from Glen Nevis.

Synergy Guides prefer a quieter and more exciting ascent via the spectacular North face. Here climbers and walkers can travel through simple technical terrain via Ledge Route, or alternatively test your head for heights on one of the classic ridges such as Tower Ridge or Castle Ridge.

Not quite what you are looking for? why not hire a Ben Nevis guide and choose amongst the hundreds of ways to climb ‘the Ben.’

Tower Ridge - Ben Nevis

Why not challenge yourself to one of Scotlands most iconic mountain routes and climb Ben Nevis the hard way? The highlight of its imposing North Face is Tower Ridge, which needs little introduction to hillwalkers and climbers alike. It has been the scene of many epic tales the majority of which culminate around the crux of the route; Tower Gap which guards the way to the summit plateau. It should be better known as one of Scotland’s prize mountaineering routes, one of the longest in the United Kingdom and the centrepiece of the spectacular North Face. In our opinion, Tower Ridge is the best way to reach the summit of Ben Nevis!

  • I had a really good day despite the poor weather. We made it up the inaccessible pinnacle and had time for a second munro, getting down before the worst of the rain. Iain gave me lots of tips throughout the day and kept me focused on the task in hand

  • Just back from two days as one of 3 beginners with Steve from Synergy Guides going over basic winter mountaineering skills including completing winter routes on Stob Coire Nan Lochan and Ben Nevis. It was an amazingly fun and informative weekend that I'll not forget and I've walked away feeling confident that I could tackle more winter routes and continue to improve on the skills we developed over the last two days.Steve is incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and also patient. He struck a perfect balance of teaching and challenge/excitement for a group of almost novices. Each route felt considered and safe and his directions were always clear and easily understood. I would definitely use Synergy again!

  • Brilliant few days with Synergy Guides! Booked 2 days to try and tackle some of the harder Cuillins during my Munro Round. Iain was great and quickly adapted the days to suit my skill level resulting in my best two Scottish mountain days. Excellent experience and will definitely use them in future!

  • Simply Outstanding In short, Steve has taken me from being a keen hill walker to leading Graded scrambles and climbs and doing my first Graded Scottish winter routes - something I never thought I would achieve.

Steve is really easy to get on with which is, in my opinion, really important when you are a nervous climber and being introduced to the technical aspects of scrambling and climbing. He is calm and instills confidence in you as you learn the skills and knowledge. Steve took me out of my comfort zone (by agreement) but I never, ever, felt anything but safe. Thanks to Steve I have had some superb adventures including all but one of the Ben Nevis ridges (getting the last one this year), summits on Skye, some great scrambles in Glencoe and climbs in Glen Nevis and I have managed to bag at least two Grade 3 Scottish Winter routes and now have the confidence to lead other folk on routes.

I can't rate Steve highly enough and highly recommend him to anyone wanting to enjoy the great outdoors in Scotland

  • I attended the winter skills weekend in the Cairngorm with fellow members of my group. Steve was simply fabulous. He was very attentative, friendly and explained everything in an understanding way that I never felt unsure of what was being asked of me. I felt safe and secure under his leading skills. This weekend was also so much fun even in the challenging winter conditions that faced us.

  • Steve is a very experienced guy and made our weekend very memorable. I gained valuable training along the way even though the weather conditions were very challenging Steve made sure we got the training we went for. He is very patient and explains everything very well answering any question and making sure we understood anything explained to us. His knowledge in mountaineering is excellent and I felt very comfortable doing the different challenges he threw at us under his guidance over the weekend. I highly recommend Steve and look forward to using him myself in the future.

  • Just one week before we started our trip to Scotland (my wife, our 17 years old son and myself) I tried to get some guides for scrambling / climbing tours on Skye and around Ben Nevis by writing emails. Steve answered nearly immediately with recommendations and possibilities for us (having described our experience so far - climbing yes, scrambling no). That was the first positive point with Steve: extremely easy to communicate - anwers always on the same day giving the needed information etc. So booking procedure & communication before and after to organise the trips: excellent! Trips: for the first day we booked the InPin (Inaccessible Pinaccle Cuillin). At the end of a wonderful day we were able to do An Stac, the Inn Pinn, Sgurr na Banachdaich and Sgurr a’ Ghreadaidh there. That was our first scrambling adventure and it was really a great day with Steve. We always felt very safe enjoying his competence, tranquility and joy. It was a wonderful full day of adventure, effort, and fun, so we wanted more scrambling! Being around Ben Nevis (Ballachulish) on the following week we did the Tower Ridge with Rich and we just can say the same again: brilliant communication before for the organisation of the trip, feeling very safe with the competence and tranquility of Rich, having a lot of fun as a group together with Rich and: yes, the Tower Ridge is a great adventure!

  • Had an absolutely incredible time climbing Tower Ridge with Synergy Guides. Steve is an extremely knowledgeable guide and a truly accomplished climber. Tower Ridge itself was a stunning and fun route on the iconic Ben Nevis. Steve made it easy to achieve a real adventure in Scotland just a day after arriving from the U.S. without needing to bring any gear. I'd absolutely recommend Synergy if you're interested in getting into the mountains in Scotland and I look forward to some more climbing with Steve and Synergy in the future!

  • Steve was recommended to me by a fellow hillwalker who knew I was looking to finish the last of my scary Munros on Skye.
Although it was short notice Steve was able to fit me in and I'm so glad that he did.
I met him at the Slig and was greeted with a huge beaming smile and a warm handshake. On the journey to the start, Steve reassured me that the route that we would take would be the most straightforward and safest and hopefully the most enjoyable for me.
On the ascent to the ridge and the dreaded An Stac screes, Steve constantly we went at my rather moderate pace. So once on a climb I was never out of breath or suffering from sweaty back syndrome. We had a couple of pitstops along the way and plenty of opportunities to look back at views when we got them.
The scary part of the climb up to the summit was made extremely safe because Steve used short roping and lots of encouragement to get me there. No I'm sure he has reached hundreds of summits but he made me feel as if I had done something very special and unique. I was so pleased with myself.
The descent was a reverse of our ascent route and it reassuring to spot familiar bits of rock and knowing what obstacles were to be overcome. By keeping my rope tight I was able to downclimb/ bumshuffle my way to safety. All too soon our day was over- I never thought I was say that about a dreich day on the Cuillin!
I would wholeheartedly recommend Steve to anyone, no matter what your abilities are. What he does in a very subtle way is encourage you, he breaks down the climb into stages so that you are aware that you are making progress and most importantly he gives you confidence and at no point do you feel that you are being a pathetic wimp!

Castle Ridge - Ben Nevis

Castle Ridge is the least technical of the ‘great ridges’. That’s not to say it is an easy way to climb Ben Nevis however, as the route climbs short steep steps of moderate ground with plenty of really enjoyable grade 2 scrambling in-between. The hardest section of Castle Ridge is a lovely 10-meter chimney which overlooks our now distant approach path – it really is one of the best routes on the mountain.

Castle Ridge boasts similarities to climbing Tower Ridge but with less commitment and a slightly shorter approach. For these reasons, we suggest Castle Ridge as a brilliant initiation to high end scrambling on the North face and a good introduction to technical Scottish winter climbing.

Ledge Route - Ben Nevis

It is a common mistake to think the North face only entertains hardcore climbers. The best of the easy scrambles on Ben Nevis is via Ledge Route which winds its way through the most spectacular scenery culminating in a narrow but very short ‘ledge’ which gives the route its name. It is a popular Scottish winter climb, but you will seldom see many people here even on the most beautiful summer days. For anyone looking for a challenging but easy route to the summit of Ben Nevis, Ledge Route is the one for you.
