HANNAH EVANS

Hannah Evans

I grew up on a rural dairy farm in Wales; for me being outside in the fresh air exploring and having adventures were part of my upbringing, and I happily continue to adopt these aspects in my adult life. The weekend after I passed my driving test at age 17, I travelled to the ‘bigger’ mountains of North Wales. This journey became a regular feature in my life, and the time I spent there only fuelled my desire to explore, travel and seek out more adventures in mountain ranges across the globe.

After leaving school, I studied Outdoor Education and Sports Science before moving to Scotland to work for the Outward Bound Trust. Throughout this time, I met so many like-minded people who inspired me and collectively, we found ourselves travelling to various places near and far. Highlights include rock climbing limestone karsts in Yangshuo – China, backpacking through the wadis of Jordan, multiple trips to the European Alps to climb or ski tour and climbing the Old Man of Hoy. During this time, I began to instruct, coach, and inspire young adults in the outdoors to enjoy and appreciate what had been a gift to me.

In 2011 I gained my Winter Mountain Leader and also completed my International Mountain Leader Award. These qualifications allowed me to spend winters teaching and leading adults in our beautiful yet harsh Scottish environment and the summers leading hiking groups in the Spanish Pyrenees. Although enriching aspects of my work, neither top the feeling of standing on the summit of Ama Dablam in 2014.

More recently, I have found myself catching the hill running bug and have had some fantastic long (for me!) journeys through the mountains. Running the Fisherfield 6 in the Northwest Highlands and the Lairig Ghru from Braemar to Aviemore are just 2 of many highlights. As my ability and interests develop and evolve, mountains remain the key component. New challenges and adventures are never far away during my own time, and I look forward to my next.
